The name “Annaziska” was coined by our friend Ezahn, the founder of Echo Sound Sculptures in Switzerland, to refer to one of his earlier sound models. This variation is a full scale of C# Minor, which is sometimes also referred to as a “Kurd”, “Aeolian”, or “Natural Minor” scale. This particular scale was also hugely popularized by Sam Maher‘s viral video of him playing in a subway station.
As a full diatonic minor, it is also sometimes referred to as the Aeolian mode in western music theory. This “natural Minor” offers everything a minor scale can offer. It can be mysterious and meditative, but also dark and full of tension or bright, positive and uplifting depending on which chords are played. This leads to great diversity and many possibilities to explore.
We offer many minor variations as well as full minor scales like this one in numerous keys. We are only listing the C# Minor variation here as that is what “Annaziska” most often refers to in the world of handpans. When this scale is built in other keys, it is more commonly referred to as a Kurd, Aeolian, or Minor scale.
A number of bottom note options are also available. When ordering, look under your desired center note, then “Minor” scale variations for this layout. You can then add additional bottom notes to your order.
