The 5 note pentatonic Akebono scale comes from traditional Japanese Music. The scale has no tonic or “root” note so any note in the scale can be used at the root. Even though it only has 5 different notes, the ability of each one to be the root allows a tremendous amount of freedom and exploration. This collection of notes is quite hypnotic, majestic, mysterious and almost enchanting and simultaneously haunting.
The scale can also be thought about as a minor scale based on the 4th scale degree of the center note. For example, F# Akebono plays flawlessly in B Minor.
The first handpans with the Akebono scale were the earliest First Generation Hang by Panart. Since then, many many builders have produced instruments with the scale. We have built them in F# and G for many years and are eager to explore them in C#, D and E.
A number of bottom note options are also available. When ordering, look under your desired center note, then “Akebono” scale variations for these layouts. You can then add additional bottom notes to your order.
