The Aeolian scale is a full natural minor scale. In the world of handpans, the same scale is often referred to as a Kurd. If it is in C#, it is sometimes also called Annaziska.
Minor variations are by far the most commonly built handpans. About 75% of the instruments we build are in Minor variations. While some are full minor scales, others are 6 note hexatonic variations such as the Cetlic, Integral or 5 note variations such as Yu Shan Diao. Basically speaking, any of these variations could be considered in the Aeolian family.
This “natural minor” offers everything a minor scale can offer. It can be mysterious and meditative, but also dark and full of tension or bright, positive and uplifting depending on which chords are played. This leads to great diversity and many possibilities to explore.
We offer the full Aeolian Scale in A, B, C#, D, E, and F# as well as 6 note variations in G, G#, C, Eb and F.
A number of bottom note options are also available for each. When ordering, look under your desired center note, then “Minor” scale variations for this layout. You can then add additional bottom notes to your order.
